Digital change, new technologies and business models - the IT labor market has been growing continuously for years. However, German companies are lacking skilled workers with practical experience - according to the digital association Bitkom, over 100,000 IT positions are currently vacant.

To prevent the shortage of skilled workers from becoming a brake on digitalization, more and more companies are relying on newcomers and career changers. The job opportunities for junior staff are correspondingly good - in companies of all sizes and in all sectors. However, demonstrable role-specific skills are a prerequisite.

GFN offers a wide range of training courses for on-premise server and cloud administration. If you have no previous experience in IT administration or want to start a new career path, it can be difficult to decide on the right course.

On this page you will find some information that will help you to find the right continuing education program for you.

Further training in the area of on-premises or cloud?

First think about which systems you want to support in administration: on-premises servers or cloud computing. This has an impact on your further training opportunities.

On-Premises (short: On-Prem) comes from the English and means something like "on site". With on-prem solutions, the required software is installed on servers in your own company, to which you as the administrator have direct physical access. You are therefore responsible for running the software on your own hardware.

With cloud solutions , on the other hand, either an infrastructure, a platform for operating a specific software or the software itself is rented. The cloud provider takes on many tasks, for example in the areas of cyber security, data backup and maintenance. The advantages: The latest technology and lower costs by saving resources, as well as greater flexibility and productivity.

While traditional on-premise solutions are still widespread and form a large market for specialists, the popularity of cloud services is now growing rapidly - and is creating many new job profiles and jobs every day.

Choice of certification: Microsoft, Linux or CompTIA?

You may still be undecided as to which qualification is right for you. Basically, there is no right or wrong here. Administrators for both Microsoft systems and Linux are sought after on the job market. At GFN, we offer both Microsoft certifications and Linux certifications.

Both systems have been established for many decades. Linux is a popular system because it is free and open source and allows for more customization. But Microsoft solutions are also used in almost every company, both on the server side and on the user side. Experienced administrators are often familiar with both systems.

Technical skills and problem-solving competencies can be demonstrated with CompTIA certifications. The certification is manufacturer-independent and is highly recognized in the areas of IT support and consulting.

System administrators are primarily responsible for the administration and maintenance of IT systems - including servers, operating systems, user accounts and software installations. Typical tasks include setting up servers, carrying out updates and managing user rights.

Network administrators, on the other hand, are responsible for the network infrastructure, i.e. routers, switches, firewalls and secure data transmission. They ensure that networks run stably, are configured correctly and respond quickly in the event of faults.

In practice, the tasks often overlap, but the focus is different: one works more with the devices themselves, the other with their connection to each other.

The duration of your training to become an IT administrator depends on your prior knowledge and your specific career goal or desired specialization. GFN offers modular training courses that usually last one month. You can combine them flexibly according to your needs - so you learn exactly what you need for your entry or advancement in IT.

In a consultation, we work together to create an individual training plan for you - tailored to your job goals and your current level of knowledge.
