What is IT service management (ITSM)?

Transparent processes, better collaboration, higher service quality – professional IT service management has many advantages. Companies want to reduce costs and become more efficient at the same time.

More and more processes in companies are being digitized. The IT department no longer just provides hardware and software, but increasingly also supports important business processes. IT also uses standardized procedures to manage services internally and externally. This is done as part of IT service management.

While in project management you implement temporary projects, in IT service management (ITSM) you deal with services that have to be provided on a continuous basis. Teams work together in every phase of an IT service – from service strategy to service operation and service improvement. They use various techniques and tools to do this.

You structure and improve processes on the basis of classic ITSM. You ensure that the requirements of customers and companies are met. This not only contributes directly to process optimization. You also ensure that your company becomes more efficient and can continue to compete in the future.

What is ITIL® and why do you need it?

ITIL® (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is by far the most widely used method for IT service management. It offers best practices for the efficient and effective provision of IT services.

By obtaining the certification, you will gain a deep understanding of the ITIL® framework. The guide consists of a collection of concrete recommendations and best practices that you can use to set up IT services. These should be tailored to the needs of companies and customers. The aim is to establish IT operations that are as standardized and predictable as possible.

The new version ITIL® 4

With the current version ITIL® 4, agile working methods have also arrived in IT service management. The focus is now increasingly on the importance of collaboration and the added value that the individual services should deliver. Instead of processes and rigid rules, you are dealing here with practices and their situational application.

What are the advantages of ITIL® 4?

ITIL skills are helpful: they support the development and improvement of digital processes and services. Service processes outside of IT are now also increasingly being set up according to ITIL, for example in HR or facility departments.

The ITIL® certifications

Identical to the previous version ITIL® v3, the ITIL® 4 certification is divided into different levels. The courses build on the knowledge and skills of the previous level. The individual ITIL® training courses should therefore be completed in a specific order.

Overview of ITIL certifications

1) ITIL® 4 Foundation

The basic course is ideal as an introduction to the new framework. In the basic certification you will learn the ITIL® terminology and frequently used service management terms. You will also be introduced to the core concepts and practices of ITIL 4®.

If you would like to build up further skills after this basic certification, you can choose between the ITIL® 4 Managing Professional (MP) and ITIL® 4 Strategic Leader (SL) certification paths. Within each pathway, you complete the individual modules with an independent certification.

2) ITIL® 4 Managing Professional (MP)

This certification path consists of several modules that provide you with in-depth ITIL® knowledge. You will acquire practical and technical knowledge of IT-supported services and processes. The prerequisite is possession of the ITIL® 4 Foundation certificate.

Anyone who has successfully completed the following four modules of the certification path can call themselves an ITIL® 4 Managing Professional:

ITIL® 4 Specialist – Create, Deliver & Support (CDS)

This is about the core tasks: You will learn how to design, implement and successfully operate IT services.

ITIL® 4 Specialist – Drive Stakeholder Value (DSV)

In this module, you will learn how to design IT processes and services with maximum added value for customers and users.

ITIL® 4 Specialist – High-Velocity IT (HVIT)

Fast provision of products and services – in this course you will learn exactly how this works in high-speed environments.

ITIL® 4 Strategist – Direct, Plan & Improve (DPI)

This course includes both practical and strategic elements. You will learn how to plan and build a self-improving IT organization. This course is a universal module. It is part of the Managing Professional (MP) and Strategic Leader (SL) certification paths.

3) ITIL® 4 Strategic Leader (SL)

This certification path is about making the ITIL® concepts and practices usable for comprehensive strategy development as a future manager. You will acquire strategic knowledge for continuous improvement and learn how to advance the company’s goals through suitable IT and digital strategies. The prerequisite is successful ITIL® 4 Foundation certification.

The following two modules will qualify you as an ITIL® 4 Strategic Leader:

ITIL® 4 Strategist – Direct, Plan & Improve (DPI)

This module is identical to the DPI module in the Managing Professional (MP) certification pathway.

ITIL® 4 Leader – Digital & IT Strategy (DITS)

In this course, you will learn how to lead your company into the future. You will also learn how to harmonize IT and digital strategies with the company’s goals.
